Some patients could avoid ICU, study suggests

An analysis of over 16 million intensive care unit admissions from 2006 to 2015 found between 1 in 6 and 1 in 7 such admissions could have been prevented, potentially reducing costs and improving care. Patients with life-limiting malignancies and those with ambulatory care-sensitive conditions such as hypertension and uncontrolled diabetes are two patient groups whose care could have been handled better if delivered outside the ICU, according to the study in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society.
