NDNA Advocates on Bill S. 997 - US Cadet Nurse Corps WWII

Posted over 4 years ago

The North Dakota Nurses Association Board of Directors attained the support of U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer this week.  Sen. Cramer agreed to co-sponsor S. 997.  This bill is to recognize and honor the service of individuals who served in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II, and for other purposes.

Passage of this legislation represents the 124,000 members of the Cadet Nurse Corps (1680 young women from ND) who served in the largest all-female, fully integrated service in World War II. They enlisted and pledged to serve for the duration of the war, not knowing when it would end!  Those who were ill and injured during the war would not have received the life-saving care of treating their serious physical and psychological wounds; nor would our citizens receive health care so needed on the home-front.

The bill has no request for financial or VA health services or benefits and are not eligible for burial in Arlington National Cemetery. They ask only to be appropriately honored and remembered for their service to the country in wartime as uniformed members of the USCNC WWII.  They will have, as honorary veterans, the right to a grave site plaque and an American flag.

The bill is now at a critical stage and we are pleased to have the support of ND Senators.
