Nurse Managers,

You are invited to participate in a research project conducted by Kayla Howard under the supervision of Dr. Kathleen Pinto. We are current faculty members in the School of Nursing at Rasmussen University.  This research is being conducted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Rasmussen University’s Doctoral of Nursing: Executive Leadership Program in which I, Kayla Howard, am a DNP student. The project title: The Influence of Our Nurse Managers' Self-Awareness & Self-Leadership Toolkit on Reducing Patient Falls and Increasing Nurse Retention in North Dakota.

North Dakota Nurse Manager’s Emotional Intelligence levels greatly impact our nursing workforce. For purposes of this study, we will be delving into self-awareness, the foundational component of emotional intelligence. Nursing retention has been a hot topic, having the limelight on this since the pandemic erupted in 2020. Failure to retain nurses has huge costs to the organizations employing them. A strong contributing factor to this piece is our nursing leadership and their emotional intelligence and self-leadership. Since this soft skill holds great value in relation to our relationship and social management, this is an area, for our North Dakota nursing leaders to place at the forefront. Improving self-awareness and self-leadership has been tied to improving nursing retention, which in turn impacts patient outcomes, specifically, patient falls.

The purpose of the research project is to assess self-awareness outcome levels before and after educational training in a combination of a sustainability plan on self-awareness training, while additionally correlating improved retention rates and patient falls in our health care facilities in North Dakota. The purpose is not to provide information for Rasmussen University leadership; however, the results will get submitted for publication and/or conference presentation in 2023.

The project consists of an initial brief self-awareness and demographic survey that will take approximately 5 minutes to complete, emotional intelligence training on self-awareness and self-leadership (60 mins), implementing journal exercises (5 mins), and a post-self-awareness self-leadership survey (5 mins) Total commitment time: Approximately 75 minutes for the project.

The link below will take you to the Teachable (learning platform) course for you to complete your initial self-awareness survey, where you are asked to enter your responses. By submitting this survey, you are giving permission for the use and analysis of your responses. By fully completing the training you may provide your email in your post survey to obtain 1 CEU and be entered into a drawing for$50 Amazon card. If you want more detailed information regarding the project, please see the informed consent document located in the course link below.  Please also see the attachment "Self-Leadership Strategies Journal PDF".

Please note that your participation is voluntary and no identifiable information is being collected.  You will not be asked to provide your name and there is no confirmation document requiring your signature or your agreement with the contents of the study. Completing the survey indicates your ‘consent’ to participate in this project. Please note that a few questions may evoke strong emotional feelings.  If you are unwilling to participate or unwilling to answer the questions, please DO NOT submit the survey.
