Overview:
Many nurses lack a good understanding of how the nurse practice act impacts their practice. There are common elements of nurse practice acts across US jurisdictions but there are also differences. A strong understanding of one’s nurse practice act, administrative rules and other board rules serve to protect the license. The presentation will also focus on the basic principles of nursing regulation, the structure of the nurse practice act, its model act and rules, including the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), as well as an individual nurse’s responsibility to follow the nurse practice act.

- Identify the role of the nurse practice act in nursing practice.
- Examine the basic elements of the nurse practice act.
- Apply concepts of nursing regulation to protect a nursing license.
