VIRTUAL POSTER Rural Disadvantage
Posted about 6 hours ago in VIRTUAL GALLERY

Background:
Persistent health disparities between rural and urban populations remain a significant public health concern in the United States, particularly among white males. Rural areas often contend with unique challenges, including fewer healthcare providers, greater distances to medical facilities, limited access to preventive services, and income inequality. These factors, combined with economic instability and reduced availability of community resources, can negatively impact both physical and mental health. In states like North Dakota, where a large proportion of the population resides in rural communities, these disadvantages are magnified. This study seeks to explore how living in a rural environment influences the health outcomes of white males, emphasizing the role of social determinants of health such as transportation, food security, and access to care. By identifying the specific barriers faced by rural residents, this research aims to inform strategies that address the root causes of health inequities in these communities.
Method:
Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, descriptive analysis will be done comparing rural white males to appropriate reference categories to determine whether they experience worse health status. Variables such as socioeconomic status, psychosocial factors, and health behaviors will be considered.
Anticipated outcomes:
It is anticipated that rural white males will demonstrate significantly worse health outcomes and face greater challenges related to social determinants of health, such as healthcare access barriers and economic disadvantage, compared to their urban peers. These findings are expected to highlight the urgent need for targeted public health interventions and resource allocation in rural communities.
Conclusion:
Understanding the unique health challenges faced by rural white males is vital for closing the gap in health outcomes between rural and urban populations. Examining how place of residence and social determinants shape these disparities can provide valuable insights for designing more responsive public health strategies. Focusing on these issues is a necessary step toward promoting fairness in health and enhancing the quality of life in rural areas.
Objectives (1-3):
1. To demonstrate the factors that contribute to the declining health status of rural white men compared to urban white men
2. To assess the relationship between geographic location and social determinants of health
3. Provide evidence that can guide policy and program development for rural white males
